A French Christmas

A French Christmas-concert consists of Christmas carols of European origin, also known in Finland, and French gamba music.

The sophistication and danceability characteristic of baroque music are brought to the fore by the French Marin Maraissuite 5 in E minorand Marc-Antoine CharpentierConcertpourquatre de Violetin compositions. Une jeune fillette and Entre le boeuf e láine gris, heard in the concert, will also come from France. Une jeune fillette is a popular melody of which different versions have been written. In Finland, this song is known as the Advent song Valmistu herra nasa. Frenchby Eustache DuCarroyFantasie 32, composed for the gamba group, is also based on the melody of une jeune fillette.

Puer natus in Bethlehemis from a medieval Piae Cantiones collection found in Finland. Pietari Brahe also recorded his own version of this in his lute book. The concert closes with Heini's bullring, to which the audience is welcome to sing along. The words can be found in the manual.

Gamba ensemble Jouhiis a band specializing in Renaissance and Baroque music. Jouh's musicians are Maija Lampela, Katri Susitaival, Ritva Hautsalo and Mikko Ikäheimo.

The core of the group's repertoire consists of music from the Renaissance and Baroque periods. The music of Gamba's golden age with its fantasies from England is part of Jouh's basic repertoire, with composers such as Henry Purcell, William Byrd, Orlando Gibbons and Alfonso Ferrabossco.  The compositions of the French Marin Marais are also an essential part of the music of the concert programs.

Jouhi has performed several different concert ensembles, for example French Christmas, The Enchantment of Fantasia, Piéces de viola. During the summers of 2013 and 2015, Jouhi performed the Cupid's dream concert, which presented Caravaggio's paintings and music composed by contemporaries.
